Jean (Hill) Chisolm

February 26, 1924 ~ January 9, 2020 (age 95)

Obituary

Mrs. Jean Hill Chisolm, born on February 26, 1924, to the late Marvin Earl and Tommie Maye Morrison Hill, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at her home in Brighton, TN, at the age of 95.

At the tender age of 12, Jean began playing the piano and organ at Brighton Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, where she shared her talents for over 60 years. Through the years, she was a fine soprano soloist. During her tenure as pianist, organist, and soloist, she also directed the choir.

Mrs. Chisolm held both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Memphis State University. She taught English and later served as guidance counselor, first at Brighton High School, then at Munford High School, until her retirement.

A huge devotee of travel, Mrs. Chisolm enjoyed national and international trips for decades. She was also passionate about tennis and played almost daily, well into her 80's. She founded the women's tennis team at Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina, and contributed to the program until her death. One of her great joys was attending the Memphis Tennis Open. Mrs. Chisolm also loved basketball, especially the University of Memphis games, where she held season tickets. In addition, she was an usher for the Orpheum Theater.

Mrs. Chisolm was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Calvin Chisolm; her son, Chancellor John Hill Chisolm; and by her two brothers, Franklin Maynard Hill and Marvin Earl Hill, Jr. She is survived by her brother, Zane Morrison Hill, Sr. (Joy) and her sister-in-law, Annie Irene Wells Hill. She also leaves behind thirteen nieces and nephews, including her cherished companion, Casey Joe Hill, and many more great-and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 12th, at 3:00 PM, at the Brighton Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held from 1:30 - 3:00, prior to the service. Interment will follow in Salem Cemetery.
