John Calvin Wingard, Sr., age 92, died on May 22, 2019. He was born on September 30, 1926, to George Thomas and Dorinda Thompson Wingard in Montgomery, Alabama. He had an older brother, George Thomas Wingard, Jr. and a younger sister, Martha Lena Wingard. During the Depression, the family moved from Alabama to Forrest City, Arkansas, where he completed high school. He began college at Arkansas State University, but his college education was interrupted by World War II. He joined the Navy and was discharged at the end of the war. He continued his college education at Arkansas College (now Lyon College) in Batesville, Arkansas. Aware of his call to the ministry, he attended Columbia Theological Seminary and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. He continued his education at Columbia Theological Seminary by completing a Master of Theology degree in 1961. John Wingard was ordained in June 1951 and served the Lord faithfully in Gospel ministry until his death. He served churches in Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee: First Presbyterian Church (Paragould, Arkansas); Handsboro Presbyterian Church (Handsboro, Mississippi); Union Presbyterian Church (Memphis, Tennessee); Liberty Presbyterian Church (Liberty, Mississippi); First Presbyterian Church (Ripley, Tennessee); Westminster Presbyterian Church (Milton, Florida); McDonald Presbyterian Church (Collins, Mississippi), First Presbyterian Church (Water Valley, Mississippi); New Life Reformed Presbyterian Church (Munford, Tennessee). He has been a member of Covenant Presbytery (PCA) since 1986.
John Wingard married Betty Jo Soyars of Mason, Tennessee, on April 4, 1961, and they were the parents of John Calvin Wingard, Jr. and George Clifton Wingard.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty Jo, his parents and siblings. He is survived by his sons John C. Wingard Jr. (wife Barbara) and Clifton Wingard, and three grandchildren: Benjamin Wingard (wife Kaddy), Megan Wingard Stern (husband Tim), and Joshua Wingard.
Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home in Covington, Tennessee, on Friday, May 24. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Mason, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 25. Interment will be at Ebenezer Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery.
The family asks that any memorials be made to Palmer Home for Children in Columbus, MS, or to French Camp Academy, French Camp, MS or to the Covenant College.
