Obituary

Mrs. Bernadine Felchlia Bierman, 89 of Covington, passed away peacefully in her home on May 11, 2021. 

The youngest of 13 children, Mrs. Bierman was born in Central City, Ill., and married Lyndle Charles Bierman in 1951. The couple moved to Memphis shortly afterwards so he could attend Southern College of Optometry. During this time, she worked for Simon-Gwynn Advertising Agency and Millington Naval Air Station while her husband attended optometry school. 

Upon his graduation, they moved to Covington where Dr. Bierman opened his long-time optometry practice. The couple built a new house on Evergreen Street and lived there the rest of their lives. 

An accomplished vocalist from an early age, Mrs. Bierman began her singing career at Central City Methodist Church. In high school she wont the first place award in a vocal performance competition. A self-taught vocalist and pianist, she received additional training from well known Memphis vocal instructor Mrs. Richard M. Martin. 

In Covington she was a principal soprano soloist for Covington First United Methodist Church's chancel choir. Her vocal excellence put her in great demand for singing at public events, weddings, and funerals. In addition to recitals and local talents revues, Mrs. Bierman appeared in Covington Little Theatre musical productions of "The Music Man" and "Annie Get Your Gun."

Mrs. Bierman was actively involved in her church, serving as president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the church's Go Class where she maintained lifelong friends. 

A member of the Covington Garden Club, Mrs. Bierman developed a passion for home gardening and maintained beautifully, well-manicured flower beds and a back patio potted plant garden. She was also an avid reader and regular patron of the Tipton County Public Library.

Mrs. Bierman is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. L.C. Bierman; her parents, John and Ola Jane (Fenton) Felchlia; and by her many siblings. Mrs. Bierman is survived by her children, Paul Bierman and Rebecca Stalcup of Covington, and Peter Bierman of Cape Coral, FL; her granddaughter, Leah Stalcup of Sevierville, TN; her sisters, Irma Wilson-deRoze of Covington and Marcella Agerborg of Blue Bell, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Bierman will be held on May 14, at 2:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church in Covington. Visitation will take place from 1:00 - 2:00 prior to the services beginning. Interment will follow on Saturday, May 15th, at 3:00 PM at Mt. Evergreen Cemtery in Central City, Ill. 

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Covington First United Methodist Church.
