Edward Calvin Murphy born to Alonzo Edward Murphy and Bertha Lee Mahaffie on March 10, 1926, died on September 22, 2020, at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Juanita Murphy, his father Alonzo and mother, Bertha, as well as his brother, John, four sisters, Esther, Ida, Mattie and Mary, his son Terry, step-daughter, Donna and step-son Gregory and two grandchildren, Blake and Jesse.
He is survived by one brother, Russell Murphy, his daughter, Mary Lee Rutledge, four sons, Eddie, Russell, Kenneth and Eric Murphy, two step-sons, Richard and Ronnie Dyles, two step-daughters, Sonja Wolf and Alicia Sharples, plus grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Edward began working on the river at age 13, and came to be a very capable River Boat Captain, well respected and sought after by River Transportation Companies. He was a hard working man all his life until he was forced into retirement in his later years from his most loved career on the river due to health issues and failing eyesight.
He has lived in Gallaway, TN for many years. He was one who loved family and friends and was very sociable to all. He loved the old Country music stars like Tex Ritter, Hank Williams and Lester Flatt an Earl Scruggs. He loved watching old TV Westerns and movies about dogs.
Edward was not particularly religious, but he did believe in God and Jesus Christ, and he believed that the Bible was the Word of God. So, now, like all men, Edward has succumbed to our inevitable resting place to await the divinely promised resurrection
There will be a graveside service for Mr. Murphy on Sunday, October 4th, at 2:00 PM at the Covington Memorial Gardens. The family asks that you please wear a face mask and have no personal contact at the cemetery if you wish to attend.
