Hugh T. Simonton Jr. “Skipper”, 75, passed away peacefully at his home in Covington, TN.
Skipper was a graduate of Byars Hall High School, Class of 61’. He attended Auburn University before graduating from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a career general contractor and lived a successful life alongside his beautiful wife of 51 years, Jean Simonton. He was an exceptional friend and highly respected member of the community.
Skipper was extremely passionate about wildlife conservation and enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing in the West Tennessee area. It was this passion that lead to his appointment as the Commissioner for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. In his time with the TWRA, he modified the definition of a mature buck deer to 8 points or higher. This modification enabled the growth of a more mature and quality buck deer in the state and significantly impacted the sustainability of deer hunting over the years. In addition, he advocated for lower licensing fees for the average hunter.
Skipper also served in the Army National Guard and was a board member of BancorpSouth Bank.
He is preceded by his wife, Jean Simonton and survived by his three sons, H.T, Cory and Hunt Simonton and his four grandchildren.
