Susan W. Whitehorn, 81, died from complications related to lung cancer on Friday, February 28, 2020, at her daughter's home in Drummonds, TN. After a six week stay in Baptist Hospital East in Memphis, TN, she died peacefully in her sleep while under hospice care.
She leaves her daughter Beth Baker (Pat); daughter Cathy Baskin; grandsons, Skip Baskin, Patrick Baker; granddaughters, Christine Geary, Aimee Hooper, and Lia Phillips. She also leaves fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Jerry Whitehorn in 2016; her daughter, Leron Carolyn Whitehorn in 1959; and her parents, Earl and Leron Johnson.
Susan graduated from Byars Hall High School in 1956 and from Memphis State University with a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in teaching. She achieved Magna Cum Laude status for both degrees. Her career included teaching advanced math in various high schools in Memphis, TN and working with the Homework Hotline with the Memphis City School System.
After retirement Susan and her husband traveled the country in a motor home coach. She eventually moved to Drummonds area where she enjoyed her grand, great-grand, and her great-great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed attending First Baptist Church of Atoka, visiting with high school friends, crocheting, and eating "Blue Bell" ice cream. She will be truly missed.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 10th, at 3:00 PM at the Covington Memorial Gardens.
